I thought this was really neat: My friend donated two pints of blood today, but you cannot just do that. He donated two pints of red blood cells rather than one pint of plasma. It's called aphersis. The nurse apparently hooks you up to a machine which withdraws blood, then centrifuges it, which gathers the red bloods, then mixes the plasma with a saline solution, which is then returned to your body. You get really cold when the plasma is being returned to the body because it has cooled down to room temperature. It takes about 45 minutes and its much more efficient because that's what's actually needed. There is also less chance of transfusion reaction, and according to him, nerdy chicks did it. ;-)
In less interesting news, I watched She's the Man, which is a reworking of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night set in a highschool. It is fan-hilariously-tastic. It's interesting to consider that these easily accessible aspects of life, will no longer be so easily accessible in less than a month.
Lastly, I found out that my staging is in Miami, FL! I still haven't gotten a list of things to bring along though. All in due time!
You are made of awesome. And so are my red blood cells.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big baby, so don't take my word for it, but I've heard that that type of blood donation hurts A LOT.
